Mary "Carol" , age 78, died peacefully on December 4, 2016 in her home in Malvern, Pennsylvania. Carol was born on December 25, 1937 in Cumberland, Maryland to her parents Henry and Ruth (Rowan) Meleri and grew up in Dover, Delaware. She went on to become a nurse after graduating from St. Agnes Nursing School in Philadelphia in 1959. She married Francis "Connie" Newman ( a former professional baseball player and Philadelphia Phillies batting practice pitcher for for thirteen years) in 1950. In their early married life Connie and Carol lived in Billings, Montana, Narberth, Pennsylvania and settled in Springfield, Pennsylvania where they raised their two children, Jennifer and Brendan. Connie and Carol moved to Malvern in 2007 where the shared a home with Jennifer and her family for the last nine years.
Carol worked as a psychiatric nurse at Fitzgerald Mercy hospital in Lansdowne, Pennsylvania from 1984 to 2014. She had a special gift for this type of nursing and received a service award from Fitzgerald Mercy in 2004. Carol was honored for her reverence for each person, service to the community, steward of knowledge and commitment to the poor. She loved to read, garden, play golf, tennis and cards with her many friends, as well as spend time with her family and adored her grandchildren. Carol loved the Shore and spent as much time as she could in Sea Isle City, New Jersey and winters in Hutchinson Island, Florida (at least for so long as they could stand to be away from the kids).
Carol is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 56 years, Connie; her sister Lenora Malone of Dover, Delaware; her daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and Raymond Walheim and their children Bray (and his wife Bridget), Kristen, Andrew, Lizzy, Abby and Joseph; her son Brendan and his daughter Ella.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, December 10, 2016 at St. Patrick's Church 104 Channing Avenue Malvern, PA. Calling hours will start at 10:00 am with a Mass at 11:15 am and burial in SS Peter & Paul Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Sisters Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary at 1140 King Road, Immaculata, PA 19345 or to the Christian Brothers c/o Brother Kevin Stanton at LaSalle University 1900 W. Olney Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19141,
