Lai Ping Lee, 81, of Philadelphia, PA, passed away on August 13, 2016 of cancer. She died peacefully at home surrounded by her family. She was the daughter of the late Bock Lai Yee and Jing Fong Tom; beloved wife of Kuo Cheung Lee; devoted mother of Eleanor (Peter) Chin-Lee, Elizabeth (John) Rykaczewski, Anthony (Tuyet) Lee, Aristotle (Belinda) Lee, Alexander (Kim) Lee and Evangelista (David) Wu; grandmother of Alexandra (Byron) Chin-Lee, Michael Chin-Lee, Michelle Chin-Lee, Michael Rykaczewski, Amy Rykaczewski, Tyler Lee, Matthew Lee, Carter Lee, Tiffany Lee, Kaitlyn Lee, Austin Lee, Anderson Lee ,Ryan Wu and Nicholas Wu; sister to Kenneth Yee (Patricia), the late Suey Cheong Yee (Chan Ngan Oi) and many nieces and nephews.
Lai Ping was the devoted matriarch of the Lee family and loving wife of Kuo Cheung for 59 years. She raised six children all the while working side by side with her husband at the Oriental Food Mart for 27 years and afterwards at the China Gate Restaurant. She was passionate about her family and adored her grandchildren.
Lai Ping was grateful for, and strived to use, every opportunity available in the United States to improve the lives of her family. Despite speaking English as a second language and having minimal formal education, she successfully sponsored many relatives and families in achieving their dream of emigrating from China to the United States. Also, she would frequently check on her elderly friends to make sure they were doing well. For the last several years she has been a loving caregiver for her husband. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends.
Viewing will be held at Holy Redeemer Chinese Catholic Church on August 18, 2016 from 6 to 8 pm followed by an 8 pm Mass. A second Viewing will be held on August 19, 2016 from 9 to 10 am immediately followed by interment at Valley Forge Memorial Gardens located at 352 S. Gulph Road, King of Prussia, PA 19406. In lieu of flowers, the family is grateful for donations to Holy Redeemer Chinese Catholic Church 915 Vine St. Philadelphia, PA 19107.
